    1. “You can’t be a leader if you’re not willing to go out on a limb. It’s the loneliest place in the world, but that’s where all the new growth is.

    • Oren Pardes says:

There are many online lists of “the loneliest places”. None of them include being a leader (or being out on a limb). To be a leader requires being followed. Those who are followed are not always even aware they are leading anyone else. Going out on a limb does not make anyone a leader – nor necessarily result in (new or beneficial) growth of any kind. People are not plants. Who others follow or don’t often has more to do with themselves than with who they choose to follow. While it is quite common for leaders (to have) to make decisions on their own, that is not the same as being alone or ever feeling lonely. Many people who are all alone don’t grow much as a result. Humans tend to grow more from interaction with others than by being all alone. The main reason a leader or teacher grows is in response to those they want to follow or learn from them. Many people feel more alone when they are not actually alone than they do when nobody else is around. Whether or not they grow or lead anyone else has little to do with “aloneness”.
